Our whole lives changed last year, when AFROPUNK came to Joburg for New Year's, and we lived our best summer. A couple of thunder storms couldn't even scare us off, from what was the beautifully curated space for music, art, fashion and performances which blew our minds. And, we're so ready to do it all again.
The festival came about with the growing need for a safe space for punks who didn't identify with the white punk space in the early 2000s. First held in Brooklyn, the festival grew in popularity with events now happening across the world in London, Paris, Atlanta and now for the second time, our beloved Johannesburg.
“The Afropunk Festival was born of necessity, a reprieve from racism in punk spaces and a chance for black punks to build community with one another. Today, the festival is less strictly punk and more soul,” - Hannah Giorgis for the New Yorker.
That Line Up!
A line up of pure talent, sourced internationally and locally, will ensure you're dancing all weekend. The Internet, Kaytranada, Flying Lotus and Thundercat (to name but a few) will join our local favorites: Moonchild Sanelly, Kwesta, Thandiswa, Muzi, DJ Maphorisa, BCUC and so much more. (See the full line up here) From soulful serenading to fully amped up beats, each performance will ensure you're left in awe or maybe out of breath.
Of course, there's a huge fashion focus, as the event encourages the most incredible street style. Basically, we've already started planning our outfits, and cannot wait to see how South Africa shows up! There's also The Sprinthrift market which will sell a load of locally produced items, in case you want an outfit change or just new threads for the next day!
