One of South Africa’s most coveted fashion designers, Gert-Johan Coetzee proves that he is a master of the fashion game as his recent checklist involved dressing the music industry elite, running his already existing ready- to-wear and couture lines and finally, launching a menswear range.
Iconic music magnate, Dr Mathew Knowles and his wife Gena were in South Africa last week for the promotion of Dr Knowles’s new novel The Emancipation of Slaves Through Music. Over the duration of their stay -which included events such as the African Leaders 4 Change Awards (hosted by Knowles)and being a guest judge on Idols SA, the couple adorned high stake fashion looks with Coetzee’s work cut out for him as he sublimely executed bespoke ensembles for each. A highlight stemmed from the hosted evening as Gena, being the epitome of romanticism, wore a Scarlett off-the-shoulder gown and Mathew, a two-tone navy suit. He takes pride in the idea of accentuating the best assets and features of the wearer, regardless of whether is associated with menswear or womenswear.
Powering forward and making the decision to start a menswear range of his own displaying it through Dr Knowles’s ensembles, Coetzee may be on the brink of all-rounded novelty. “Menswear requires a totally different focus, so it was great timing, because we now have that infrastructure in place,” says Coetzee. His Autumn/Winter collection showing at South African Fashion Week tonight (25 October 2018 at 20h00) is inspired by wanderlust, with special references made to the visual dynamics of Italian style and culture.
