Living for the day that we too have our own series of denims, ELLE attended the launch of the Soviet Miss SA Denim Range, where reigning Miss South Africa 2018, Tamaryn Green featured her newly innovated denim jeans- the Gina and Rolene. Simple in design with impactful technical details, these denims undeniably embodied the Miss SA brand and paid homage to Tamaryn’s classically sophisticated style. Each pair is unique in aesthetic with the Gina standing out as the risk-taker choice with an indigo wash, ripped detailing and signature trims that enhance the overall look. Alternatively, the Rolene comes in the form of a periwinkle blue jegging with rose gold finishing details along the waistband. The silver detail featured on the back pocket of the Rolene denim was carefully crafted and implemented in reminisce of the ‘Diamond Jubilee’ which was the theme for the pageant this year. Celebrating this awe-inspiring achievement, we sat down with Tamaryn where we got a few lively stories, useful tips and meaningful advice from the professional herself.
What does a day in your life look like when you are one of South Africa’s most coveted figures at the moment?
The life of being a Miss South Africa involves you always being in the lime light even if you want to lay low, dress casually and go for a walk - someone will always recognize you and you have to be prepared for that! We have a calendar and every day is different, it’s hard to fit my schedule into the 8 to 5 time frame. There’s never that certainty, some days involve an early start and others simply don’t but it’s important that you present yourself well, look good and look after yourself and wearing denims essentially becomes a part of that. I love these Soviet Denims because when you’re out every day, you don’t always want to be wearing a dress and that’s when a pair of your denims becomes so important and plays into the life of a Miss SA. Pairing it with a breezy top and comfortable shoes, that’s a great look.
How has your affiliation with a brand like Soviet changed your ideals about fashion and personal style?
To be honest, before taking the title as Miss SA, I was never interested in fashion and style because essentially, I was a student. I would wake up every day, slip on my sneakers and scrubs and off I would go. I used to see Soviet in store but I never walked in and tried on a pair of denims. Now, after learning about Soviet, I understand what is behind the name and that grew my knowledge about the constructs of fashion in general. Its helps that Soviet has an incredible team which makes it so easy to love the brand.
What do you look for in the perfect pair of denim?
For me, Denim is all about comfort. I want it to be comfortable and it must compliment my figure so it’s important for it to look good. I love all the different types of denims ranging from dark to light, ripped to classic- it’s purely about the shape. If its makes your booty pop, it’s worth it. If it looks good and feels good- great! Denims are especially hard to find because of my height, usually they’re either too long and too wide or they fit well but are too short and Soviet Denims actually fit me perfectly in length and the shape is super flattering.
Must have denim item for summer?
Denim shorts. Quick answer! When you go to the beach, you want to throw on a lovely pair of shorts. It can be dressed up as well, pair it with a heel and a jacket and your good to go.
One word to describe the Soviet Miss SA Denim Range?
It’s Versatile. There’s something about it for everyone. There’s a fitted fashion forward pair and a plain, fitted jegging.
Best style advice you’ve ever received after being taking the title of Miss South Africa?
Always have a plan B in the car. If something happens to what you’re wearing right now, always have a plan B. Have an extra pair of shoes with you, black shoes go with everything. Black shoes and a black dress fits every occasion, have those two items and you’ll be fine. You can dress it up or down- its again with that versatility factor.
How has your style changed since becoming Miss SA?
It has improved so much! I was such a simple girl and when shopping now, I just know exactly what I want. A tip from my stylist: If you walk into a store and just scan the room and something catches your eye, it’s worth purchasing, if not, move on to the next store. I love that the Miss SA team took me as I was, simple and elegant and didn’t try to change my aesthetic completely. They simply enhanced who I am which makes me super happy.
Tamaryn's denims (#TGDenim) will be launched publicly on 3 November 2018. Following this, it will be available at Soviet stores nationwide. For more information go to: www.sovietdenim.com
