SUMMER MAKE-UP LOOKS WE LOVE

ELLE assistant beauty editor Sarah Hoberman looks to the runway and gives us her edit of the best summer make-up trends:

Copper Cabana

This summer, shimmery eyeshadow is acceptable as long as it is in the copper family. The look is easy and ‘undone’ where the colour is on the eyelid only. The key is to keep the look monochromatic – stick to one shade of copper all over. Dark skins will look best with a deep shade close to their skin tone. Lift the look with lashings of black mascara and a nude lip.

TIP: Wear a primer on the lid to prevent creasing that can happen easily with shimmery shadows.

Aqua Princess

Blues and greens have always been a no-no or considered best left to the eighties. Well, believe it or not, it is time to get reacquainted with turquoise! Emulate the  Moschino girls and line your eyes generously with turquoise, from the corner of your inner rim, all the way round!  Experiment with shades ranging from sea green to navy .

TIP: Beware of pencils with glitter, they can irritate the sensitive eye area specially if used in the water line.

Neon velvet lips

Every season brings a new version of the bright lip colour, whether neon, pop, glossy, matte… and so it goes. The key to staying on trend choosing the right colour and texture – think uber matte, velvety texture. Achieve this look by using a combination of lip pencil, matte lipstick, and a generous coat of matching matte powder pigment pressed on top. Touch up as often as needed.

Tip: Reapply and blot several times and use a lip pencil to blend and push in the colour.

Bronze Age

Summer calls for glowing, golden skin.  Skin is the focus so start with a perfect canvas using  a water-based foundation and play with contrasts: use a bronzer a shade darker than your skin tone to sculpt the cheeks and a highlighter a shade lighter than your skin tone to enhance the cheekbones. Darker sculpting shades are best kept matte whereas highlighters will work best when shimmery.

Tip: Oily skins must beware of shimmer, stick to everything matte as your skin will look naturally glowing.

Radiant Rose

This look can be interpreted in a few different ways, pick the one that suits you best! Think minimal make-up, fresh rosy cheeks, and a slick of peachy clear gloss with defined lashes. If glossy lips aren’t for you, a peony pink lip stain will do the job but keep it natural and apply with your finger tips for a lived-in look.

Tip: Cream blush works best for the dewy feel – apply with finger tips on the apple of the cheeks and blend gently.

The Soft Smoky

Can we ever get away from the smoky eye?! Probably not! Keep the focus on the lower lash line for a modern look and blend the product well, pulling it down slightly to make your eyes appear bigger. The upper lid is kept natural except for a few coats of black mascara. Highlighting the inner corner of the eye with an irridescent eyeshadow will open up the eye beautifully.

Tip: A matte black or dark eyeshadow is the product of choice applied with a small pointed brush.
