Meghan Markle Makes a Surprise Appearance in a One-Shouldered Black Gown at the British Fashion Awards

Meghan Markle has made a surprise appearance on stage tonight at the British Fashion Awards to honor Clare Waight Keller, Givenchy's designer and the woman behind Meghan's royal wedding dress and countless other outfits for Meghan's first big events as a royal. Keller won the award for British Womenswear Designer of the Year and thanked the Duchess of Sussex on stage for working with her. Meghan wore a one-shouldered black gown by Givenchy for the occasion with Tamara Mellon gold sandals and Pippa Small jewelry.

This was fully intended to be a surprise for Keller. “The Duchess was invited to present this award by the British Fashion Council and thought it would be a lovely surprise for Clare Waight Keller,” a royal source told royal reporter Carolyn Durand

On stage, Meghan presented the award to Keller and started her speech by making a few words about being there "in my new home, the UK. It’s so nice to see so many familiar faces, many of you I’ve known for quite awhile, and there’s a lot of you that I’ve met in the past year so thank you for the warm welcome," she said. "As all of you in this room know, we have a deep connection to what we wear. Sometimes it’s very personal, sometimes it’s emotional. But for me this connection is rooted in really being able to understand that it’s about supporting and empowering each other, especially women." She proceeded to announce Keller as the winner of the Womenswear Designer Award.

Keller had glowing words for Meghan that she shared with the crowd. "This woman is so amazing," Keller said. "I got to know Meghan on such a personal level. To have someone like that trust you in an incredible moment in their life is something that is just the most unbelievable honor. And I can't thank you enough because it was the most beautiful moment. Thank you." The two left the stage together, Meghan's arm around Keller.

This is Meghan's first event this week and comes after she had several private engagements last week. Meghan attended a meeting with university leaders, a holiday party for the Royal Foundation, and a charity carol service then.
