Body language expert and author Judi James has taken a closer inspection of Victoria and David Beckham's recent anniversary photos.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since Victoria Beckham - dressed in a champagne-coloured Vera Wang gown - and David said ‘I do’ at Luttrellstown Castle, Dublin.
Earlier this week, the famous A-list couple celebrated their wedding anniversary, with a visit to Harper’s school Sports Day before escaping to Paris for a romantic dinner.
On Tuesday, the couple were spotted at the sporting event, where David took part in a bean bag Dads race, much to his wife’s amusement. During their day out, the fashion designer was photographed wrapping her arms around her husband’s waist.
However, while the public display of affection may suggest marital bliss, body language expert and author Judi James believes subtle differences in the couple’s body language may suggest otherwise.
‘Their sufficient PDA is to show they’re an item - they’re in love,’ James says.
‘When you look closely, it looks like it’s Victoria who is putting in all the effort. She encircles him with both arms around the waist. A gesture like that would normally be seeking a mirrored response. She looks besotted, looking into his face.'
In comparison, David appears to stand with his arms crossed while looking out into the distance. Despite Victoria’s loving gesture, James says David’s body language ‘isn’t mirrored’.
‘He looks like a happy family man on a day out, but [it's not] a romantic pose.
‘Considering they're a long-term couple, her body language is unique. Those rituals tend to occur in the early loved up stage of a relationship. His body language is normal for a couple that has been married that long.’
To mark their 19-year-milestone with their fans, the couple took to Instagram on Wednesday to gush about their other half, following recent speculation they were on the brink of a split.
’19 years!!! X I love u so much x,’ the fashion designer captioned a snap of the pair at dinner.
Posting the same picture to his 48.3m Instagram followers, David wrote: ’19 Years WOW ... This time 19 years ago I was dressed from head to toe in purple... Happy anniversary to the most amazing wife & mummy ... Love You x.’
According to James, this is another pose that suggests Victoria is putting in more effort than David to make the image appear romantic.
‘Clearly their pose is to define a happily long married couple on their wedding anniversary,’ explains James.
‘What’s interesting is that there’s a slight disconnect with their body language. David is facing the camera with a sociable smile while holding the stem of the wine glass. However, Victoria is putting in a massive effort to make this look like a real ‘togetherness’ shot. She’s leaning across the table and her smile is quite coy - it’s a smile of a woman in love looking cute with her head slightly bowed.’
Looking closer at the picture, James notes the couple aren’t actually holding hands.
‘Victoria has placed her hand on David’s wrist,’ notes James. ‘It’s a signal of possession, fondess. The overall impression looks like they’re holding hands but they’re not. Overall, the picture is saying ‘we’re still together in love and celebrating.’
