BACKSTAGE RUNWAY HAIR

ELLE Style Reporter in association with Blackberry®, Trevor Stuurman goes backstage at MB Joburg Fashion Week and SA Fashion Week to check out what hair styles are trending on the runways!

Hair style commentary by Sarah Hoberman, ELLE beauty assistant.

Avant Apparel

A goth romance-inspired collection filled with dramatic and opulent pieces tailored to perfection.

This headpiece is a cross between the exoticism of India merging with the Gucci-esque horse bits. Whatever way you see it, we love the element of modern but tradional hair adornment.

The bun is here to stay and this version is so elegant and graceful. The soft styling and shape defines the neck and jawline and adds immense femininity. Make sure the bun is of a decent size, a hair piece goes a long way!

Gavin Rajah

Although Rajah dominated the runway with camouflage prints, peplums and pantsuits – he still showed us he is king of the evening dress with embellished lace detail and a showstopper gown, complimented by a crown of flowers and military makeup.

The combination of an oversized flower crown and minimal hair in sight works beautifully. Fresh flowers are de rigueur but plait all your hair in a crown to keep the look strong.

David Tlale

Not your average show. David ditched the ramp and opted for a one-of-a-kind installation on the stairs of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature where we got to get up close to baroque-inspired garments.  The gold and metallics told a beautiful story about the City of Gold.

Bouffant revisited but in the most modern/cool/vintage kind of way. Stay safely on the side of fabulous by pairing this pouf with slick, modern tailoring and androgynous make-up.

Stefania Morland

The collection was nothing short of elegance and day-to-day glam. Her choice of fabric consisted of feminine lace, sheer and sequins in earthy tones, dirty pinks and greys.

This season will see the pony tail getting lower and a tad undone, such an easy but gorgeous trend to do yourself! The key points are: aim  for the nappe of the nack, keep the look slightly messy and wrap a strand of hair around the elastic band.

Stoned Cherrie

Stone Cherrie returned to SA Fashion Week with a bang. The collection was centered around the Jozi skyline. The plaited mohawk beautifully highlighted the towering Johannesburg buildings.

This breathtaking hairstyle would give Rapunzel a run for her money! Certainly the most sculptural, avant-garde look of the runway and we love it! The idea here is to combine braids and height. Keep your make-up super-feminine to counterbalance the look.

Suzaan Heyns

Suzaan introduced us to a bold and fearless bride that still is very romantic and feminine.

We can’t get enough of veils and are so happy to see them flooding Suzaan Heyns’ runway! Fascinators suit almost every hairstyle, from a pixie crop to long tresses. Play hide and seek from behind your veil and pair with a dark goth-like lip for an edge.
