The ELLE beauty team turned to some of our favourite stylists for their party hair know-how.

Here's what came out tops:

Going for the chop is this season’s biggest hair trend and it’s got to be the least fussiest party do around. The trick is to go for a pixie cut to suit your face shape. For the more mature women, having a pixie cut that is slightly longer on the outline with more soft texture will be more flattering. With the correct cut and products, there is no reason to look frumpy or masculine.

When styling this look, have a more relaxed finger-dried approach as an over blow-dried look will age you. Loosen up the look by applying a dry matte wax such as This is a Strong Dry Wax by Davines. The pixie is an extremely low maintenance cut which takes about 5 mins to style but it needs to be cut regularly, every 4 - 6 weeks. – David Gilson from Carlton International

Soft and whimsical, an undone bun worn closer to the neck is a pretty and carefree hairstyle that works well in the party scene too. Prepare the hair with a nourishing shampoo and conditioner such as Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Moisturising Lather Shampoo and Keratin Cream Rinse. Using a hydrating cream such as Hydro Cream Whip prior to blow drying will smooth the hair beautifully.

Make sure to leave a few fine tendrils out around the hairline to create softness and then comb the hair back and secure 3 ponytails low in the nape. Tie slipknots along the length of each ponytail and complete by joining the ponytails with each other, and with a twist, pin and secure to the side of your choice, just behind the ear.  Apply some Finishing Spray to secure the style with a flexible, touchable hold. And voila! Now you have a simple, effective and elegant hairstyle. – Kent Nicholls National Education Manager Paul Mitchell.

Get va-va-voom party impressive hair and pump up the volume of your locks for a showstopping look! To achieve this hairstyle, start by applying a volumising mousse such as L’Oreal Professional Tecni art volume lift from roots to ends and turn your head upside down to dry off with medium heat to lift the roots. When your hair is 60 to 70% dry, get back up and start blow-drying with different round brush sizes and leave the brushes in for a few minutes to get the shape.

Finish the look by softly curling the ends with a curling iron or a wide barrel curling tong. Be sure to use a heat protectant spray such as GHD heat protector spray and to finish off, add some shine with a serum such as Mythic Oil by L'Oreal or Kerastase Elixir. – Shelene Shaer from Tanaz.
